Group Anthropic ties to the Chinese state used Claude Code to run espionage intrusions
In mid-September 2025 Anthropic detected an espionage campaign it assesses with high confidence was run by a Chinese state-sponsored group it calls GTG-1002. Posing as security testers, the operators had Claude Code with MCP tools do most tactical steps, from reconnaissance to exfiltration. About 30 entities in technology, finance, chemical manufacturing and government were targeted, and a handful of intrusions succeeded.
