Fake Solidity extension installed in the Cursor IDE led to about $500,000 crypto theft
Kaspersky investigated a June 2025 case in which a blockchain developer in Russia lost about $500,000 in crypto. The developer had installed a fake Solidity extension from the Open VSX registry into the Cursor AI code editor. The extension ran scripts that installed remote access tools and an infostealer, which took wallet passphrases. Open VSX removed it on July 2, 2025, and a near copy appeared the next day.
